In today's Gospel, Jesus gives us a challenging lesson about how to deal with conflict within the community. He tells us not to ignore wrongdoing or simply talk about it behind someone's back. Instead, we are called to approach the person directly, privately, and with love: "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.i
This is not always easy. It takes courage to speak honestly, humility to listen, and love to seek reconciliation rather than victory. Jesus is reminding us that Christian community requires more than being friendly with one another. We are responsible for helping one another grow in holiness.
At the heart of this teaching is the desire to restore relationships. Correction should never be about embarrassing, punishing, or proving ourselves right. It should be an act of charitya sincere effort to help another person and to heal what has been broken.
Jesus then gives us a beautiful promise: Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." When we gather with hearts committed to forgiveness, reconciliation, and truth, Christ is present among us.
St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that love fulfills the law. Sometimes loving our neighbor means offering encouragement; sometimes it means forgiving; and sometimes it means having the courage to speak a difficult truth gently and respectfully.
May Christ give us the wisdom to speak with charity, the humility to listen, and the grace to forgive. May our parish community be a place where people encounter not judgment and division, but the healing presence of Christ.
