OCIA – Becoming Catholic
OCIA – Becoming Catholic
Welcome to the Tri-Parish Catholic Community
We are delighted to welcome you as you explore your faith journey and consider becoming a Catholic Christian. Our parish community is here to support and celebrate this journey with you through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).
Program Overview
The OCIA program includes two essential components:
- Academic Formation: Weekly classes held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM, lasting about an hour and a half.
- Spiritual Formation: Sunday dismissal, where participants leave Mass with a leader to discuss the day’s scriptures.
Both components are vital for a meaningful experience, and we encourage you to make a strong commitment to the program. However, your participation does not obligate you to proceed with confirmation, and you may withdraw at any time. Regardless of your decision, you are always welcome at our parish.

What is OCIA?
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is a faith formation process rooted in history. It is more than just learning about Catholicism—it is about developing a relationship with God and the Catholic community. As you explore your faith, you will experience spiritual growth while becoming part of both our parish family and the global Church.
This journey allows you to reflect on how your life experiences and beliefs have led you here. Throughout the process, members of our parish will pray for you, learn alongside you, and share their stories of faith.
Who is OCIA for?
The OCIA program is designed for:
- Adults who have never been baptized and desire to become Catholic.
- Adults baptized in another Christian tradition who wish to join the Catholic Church.
- Baptized Catholics who have not yet received the Sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation.
- Adult Catholics seeking to deepen their understanding of the faith.
Common Questions
How long does it take?
OCIA is a gradual spiritual journey, not a fixed-length program. At our parish, it typically runs from early fall to winter, culminating in the Sacraments of Initiation at Easter. A four-week period of Mystagogy follows Easter to deepen understanding.
What if I was baptized in another church?
If your baptism is verified, you will not be baptized again. Instead, you will make a profession of faith and receive the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.
What is the first step?
If you are considering becoming Catholic or want more information, contact our parish office at (208) 522-4366.
What is the process?
The OCIA journey includes five key periods:
- Inquiry: A time to explore Catholicism and reflect on God’s call.
- Catechumenate: Deepening understanding of the faith after the Rite of Acceptance/Welcoming.
- Purification and Enlightenment: Spiritual preparation, starting with the Rite of Election.
- Paschal Triduum and Sacraments of Initiation: Celebration of Easter through Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
- Mystagogy: Post-Easter reflection to deepen faith and integrate into the Catholic community.
Additional Considerations
Sponsors
Each participant journeys with a Catholic sponsor—a baptized and confirmed Catholic who actively practices the faith. Sponsors attend Mass with you and help you integrate into the parish. If you don’t have a sponsor, we can provide one for you.
Attendance
Regular attendance is vital for both classes and Sunday Mass. Missing no more than two classes is recommended, as discussions and worship are key to the program’s impact.
Photos and Privacy
We may request a photo to help our community pray for you and recognize you. If you prefer to keep your photo private, we will honor your wishes.
Cost
There is no fee for the program, and all study materials are provided. If you can, a donation to help cover the cost of materials is appreciated.
We look forward to walking with you on this journey of faith!
