In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that following Him will not always be easy. He speaks openly about His coming suffering and death, and then says: "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me."
Peter struggles to understand why Jesus must suffer.
Like Peter, we can sometimes wish that faith would protect us from difficulties. Yet Jesus reminds us that discipleship is not about avoiding every cross; it is about remaining faithful and trusting God when life becomes difficult.
Each of us carries a different cross-perhaps illness, grief, family struggles, disappointment, or the daily sacrifices required to love and serve others. Jesus does not ask us to seek suffering, but He does ask us to remain faithful to love, even when it is costly.
The promise of the Gospel is that the cross is not the end. Jesus leads us through suffering to new life.
When we give ourselves to God and to others, we discover the true meaning of life.
As we celebrate the Eucharist this Sunday, let us ask for the grace to carry our crosses with faith, to trust Christ more deeply, and to follow Him with courage and hope.
